Current Opportunities

Starting date: As soon as possible

We are looking for a dedicated, organized and collaborative Student Support Specialist (SSS) to provide direct support to senior level students with neurodiverse needs including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, etc. The SSS would assist with Mathematics, Life Science, Composition and other areas that may be needed. A familiarity with the BC curriculum content in these upper grade subjects would be an asset but is not required. The role will include explaining content in the different subjects, breaking down tasks into manageable steps, supporting aspects of their executive functioning and communicating with teachers, staff and parents. The individual will support the students as they work on the content adapted and provided by the classroom teachers, and be able to collaborate in making additional adaptations. Depending on the schedule, the SSS may also support other students in the Skills Learning Lab.

The successful candidate will have a strong awareness or interest in neurodiversity and supporting neurodiverse students in an educational environment. The individual will have previous experience working with students with different needs, awareness of skills that develop Executive Functioning, as well as some education or related background. Competence with the subjects is key in order to effectively explain, review and adapt material for the student.

This will be a contract position, paid hourly at $35/hr, approximately 20-28 hours per week over 4 or 5 days.

Role and Responsibilities

The Student Support Specialist will be part of the Learning Support Program and will work closely with the guidance of the Skills staff and classroom teachers and the Learning Support Teacher Leader. This individual will be required to support neurodiverse students in managing organizational strategies, completing school work, studying and communicating with teachers, parents and the Skills Team. This staff member will help ensure that the students are using time effectively at school, breaking down assignments into small steps, explaining complex vocabulary, identifying aspects that are too challenging for individual students and creating timelines with individual students to ensue work is completed on time.

The successful candidate will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively, will report to the Learning Support Teacher Leader, and will have responsibilities that include (but are not limited to):

  • Employ appropriate strategies and methods relevant to individual student’s needs
  • Working with student during class time, in the Learning Lab, separate from the class
  • Remain up-to-date with all relevant courses of the student
  • Ensure that school work is suitably adapted by the classroom teachers
  • Explain and review assignments with the student in a one-on-one environment
  • Support the student with organization and planning strategies to complete school work
  • Communicate regularly with the Learning Support Teachers and classroom teachers
  • Clear communication skills through email, video calls and in person
  • Familiarity with computer platforms such as Google Classroom, Google Drive, Gmail, etc.
  • Track student progress
  • Support other students as possible

Requirements for the position

  • Completion of a University or College program
  • Student Support or Teacher training would be an asset (including teacher certification)
  • Able to demonstrate competence in senior level grades core subjects (English, Math, and Life Science)
  • At the time of application, you must be legally permitted to work in Canada
