Director of Teaching and Learning

We are looking for a dedicated, dynamic, compassionate, innovative and inspiring leader to join our school family. A person with integrity, the successful candidate will have the ability to lead and collaborate while working hard and having fun. King David is a young and growing school with approximately 250 students and 50 staff members. We are looking for an educator who will thrive in a relational setting and work closely with the Head of School and Deputy Head of School to lead King David in its commitment to creating innovative and dynamic learning experiences for our students. This is an excellent position for those looking to develop and grow as a school administrator.

The successful candidate will have an excellent understanding of independent school culture, demonstrate a passion for teaching, and have the ability to inspire staff and students to be actively engaged in developing the process of learning. You must value diversity as it relates to all people, including aspects of identity, and have respect for indigenous traditions and ways of knowing.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Director of Teaching and Learning will have a shared responsibility for all aspects of the school educational program and operations, with special responsibility to promote the highest standards for our academic program. A small teaching component may be required.

The ideal candidate will have exemplary communication, organization, problem solving, time management, and team building skills. They are self-directed and independent, and committed to shared decision-making in a small, but complex school environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively with the Head of School and Deputy Head of School to:

  • Direct all programs of the school (academic, athletic, arts and service)
  • Ensure curriculum integrity, alignment, and development
  • Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all faculty members on performance management including professional development and growth and evaluation
  • Inspire our faculty to embrace a culture of ongoing growth and innovation of professional practice
  • Coordinate school initiatives on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Manage and support aspects of school life that may include assemblies, celebrations, and co curricular programming

Requirements for the position:

  • Master’s Degree (or an interest to further their own education)
  • Teacher Certification through the BC Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch
  • Seven years or more of exemplary teaching experience

Jewish Studies Educator

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Jewish Studies educator capable of inspiring children to love learning and Judaism. The successful candidate will join a Judaic Studies team that focuses on nurturing each student’s unique talents and passions, empowering them to express and act upon their best interests. The immersive Jewish experience creates a clear path to Jewish conviction, pride and identity. Our program encourages students to come to terms with relevant Jewish issues and aims to instil the belief that you can be as moral and holy as you are successful. All of this takes place within an inclusive community that provides a feeling of belonging and an awareness of personal responsibility. Our mission is to help Jewish teenagers, from all backgrounds, embrace Jewish values and traditions as they develop their independence and desire to live a meaningful life.

Requirements for the Position

  • Able to demonstrate excellent skills as a teacher and a passion for teaching Jewish Studies
  • Must have strong knowledge of Jewish thought and texts, including proficiency in teaching Talmud and Tanakh skills and their relevance to the modern world
  • Ability to work in, and contribute to, a pluralistic Jewish setting
  • Has a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Jewish Studies educator and has good classroom management skills appropriate for high school
  • A BC Teaching Certificate or a Jewish Studies Degree, or Jewish Education training, or related field, enabling one to become certified to teach in a BC high school setting
  • Assist in collaborating and further developing the Judaic team’s vision and curricular goals
  • Use technology as a teacher and to support students’ learning
  • Willing to be involved with co-curricular school events and Jewish life programming
  • Capable of ongoing reflection, able to self-assess, and accept and apply feedback
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in written form, with students, colleagues, parents and community members
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
