Head Custodian

About the position:

Reports To: Director of Finance
Direct Reports: 2 Custodians
Status: Full-Time, Year-Round (12 months)
Job Band / Salary Range: $60,000 – $75,000 based on experience

Job Purpose:

The Head Custodian is responsible for ensuring that the School’s facilities are clean, safe, well-maintained, and fully operational to support a high-quality learning environment. This position leads the custodial team, oversees daily cleaning and maintenance activities, coordinates repairs, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Custodial Operations Management

  • Oversee and participate in daily cleaning.
  • Implement cleaning schedules and standards.
  • Ensure all facilities are prepared each day.


2. Staff Supervision & Leadership

  • Train, supervise, and evaluate custodial staff.
  • Schedule staff and coordinate coverage.
  • Foster a positive, safety-conscious team culture.


3. Facility Maintenance & Safety

  • Perform daily inspections and minor repairs.
  • Coordinate major repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC and safety standards.


4. Inventory & Supplies Management

  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Order stock within budget.
  • Ensure safe storage of chemicals.


5. Event Support & Setups

  • Coordinate setups for events.
  • Provide support during occasional evening or weekend events.


6. Emergency Response

  • Respond to facility emergencies.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness.


7. Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain logs and documentation.
  • Recommend improvements and capital needs.


Internal & External Relationships:

Internal: Works with Director of Finance, Head of School, Deputy Head of School, Operations Manager, teachers, and administrative staff; supervises custodial team.

External: Interfaces with contractors, vendors, and inspectors.


Workplace Requirements & Conditions:

  • On-site role; occasional evenings/weekends.
  • Regular lifting (up to 50 lbs) and equipment use.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and outdoor weather.
  • Must follow WorkSafeBC and school protocols.
