MOVEMBER – SUPPORTING MEN’S HEALTH

The Movember Campaign has come to a close and it has been so great seeing everyone getting involved by learning about men’s mental and physical health and raising money for the Movember organization. The non-profit organizes and fundraises for programs including cancer research, suicide prevention, mental health programs, and much more. It was awesome seeing students and teachers growing a ‘mo to save a bro. ~Zachary Bordan, Co-Chair Movember Committee, Co-Vice President Student Council

EXPLORING POST-SECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES

… IN THE ARTS

Visual Arts Teacher, Nicole Dumas, along with Grade 12 students Rachel Marliss, Kiera Katz, and Blue Feldman (pictured together above) who are interested in pursuing Visual Arts after graduation, had the opportunity this week to widen their understanding of their post-secondary options. They visited an ARC (Artist Run Centre) called Artspeak and had a private tour of Cole Pauls’s show “Dazhän Kwändǖr ch’e (This is a Story).” They also explored SFU’s School for Contemporary Arts undergraduate and graduate studios before heading over to Emily Carr University to view classroom, shop, and studio spaces. They used this valuable opportunity to ask questions about their applications and portfolios. Thank you to Nicole Dumas for organizing this excursion and Learning Support Teacher Leader, Benje Bondar for his participation.

… IN HEALTH SCIENCES

Accompanied by Biology and Science Teacher, Brady Mymko, Grade 12 students Zack Bordan and Ali Fadida (pictured together above) joined students and teachers from across Vancouver and attended The Canadian Hall of Fame Discovery Days in Health Sciences at Beth Israel to learn more about pursuing careers in healthcare and medicine.

Discovery Days in Health Sciences was a great opportunity to learn from doctors, researchers, and specialists in the medical field from UBC, BCIT, and BC Children’s Hospital. Throughout the day we heard keynote speakers and attended workshops about different careers in medicine. It was valuable talking to doctors and researchers about the path they took to get to their careers.

In the workshops I attended, I learned about the day-to-day work that geneticists and pathologists do. I enjoyed the pathology workshop, where we were put in small groups to solve a medical case. We had to think critically and determine what was causing the condition and the medical problem. ~Zachary Bordan, Grade 12

The small group sessions allowed us to have a more in-depth view into professional specializations. I was grouped with a Psychologist and then Child Life Specialist, who helps children prepare for and mange medical procedures. The photo above shows me holding a demonstration doll with an IV that a Child Life Specialist uses as a tool to help children feel comfortable with and prepared for their treatment. ~Ali Fadida, Grade 12
