DESIGNING UNSINKABLE BOATS
Ben Ginsberg observing the buoyancy of an unsinkable boat
Mr. Beadon and his Grade 8 students took on an “Unsinkable Boat” challenge: students had to design, create, test, and revise a boat made from simple materials. The catch: they had to “purchase” the materials for a certain number of pennies. The material costs were based on the environmental impact of the material. eg, 4 popsicle sticks for 1 penny, 4 styrofoam balls were 40 pennies. The boat needed to be able to hold the same number of pennies (or more) without sinking! A great exercise in collaboration, creative thinking and the design process!
AN INTERVIEW WITH CLIMATE ACTIVIST AND KING DAVID GRADE 12 STUDENT, SARA BAUMAN
We sat down with Sara Bauman this week to hear about her recent meeting with the Ministry of Education, where she advocated for changes to the new BC curriculum to include proper climate education across all grades and subjects.
Sara is a climate activist, a student at King David, a member of CERBC (Climate Education Reform BC) and SustainabiliteensShe is planning to attend McGill next to study Environmental Sciences and continue to make an impact on climate and environment policy.
Tell us about what led to your meeting with the Ministry of Education this week?
I’m involved in a group called Climate Education Reform BC (CERBC), which is a student-led movement of about 15 students from different schools who are working on getting climate education integrated into BC’s K- 12 curriculum. The campaign started about a year ago and we were finally able to get the Ministry of Education to meet with us this week. The meeting went really well! We talked about the six needs of our Reform to Transform Campaign (you can read them here). The Ministry is already working on education reform and we are continuing to consult with them so that we have student voices developing a curriculum because the curriculum is for students…

MAZAL TOV AND KOL HAKAVOD TO SHAY KEIL!
This week, accompanied by his daughter Tali, Grade 11, Shay Keil
presented the cheque to BC Children’s Hospital
Shay Keil recently demonstrated how the spirit of philanthropy and the power of social media, when used together, can make a huge impact. Inspired by a former colleague whose son was ill and had spent many weeks at BC Children’s Hospital, Shay chose to focus his fundraising efforts there. In just a few weeks, his initiatives raised a remarkable $51,019, far exceeding his initial goal of $30,000 to celebrate 30 years with Scotiabank!

We are grateful to Shay for his ongoing support of King David, Jewish Family Services and so many other community organizations.
