Parsha: Shemini: Leviticus 9:1 – 11:47
On Tuesday morning, our staff and students returned to school from Passover Break full of smiles! As per usual, students were greeted by Mr. Klein and Mr. Mo as they came in, but there was a new addition: Anne Bonnycastle!

We are thrilled to have Ms. Bonnycastle join us as our new Assistant Head of School: Director of Teaching and Learning. She comes to us from Crofton House with years of experience and wisdom, not to mention great ideas!
To kick off the day, we had a school-wide assembly over Zoom. Mr. Klein and Mr. Mo properly welcomed everyone back and reminded us all of the importance of maintaining our COVID-19 safety protocols so that we all get through the next few months of school healthy. Then Ms. Bonnycastle properly introduced herself to our student body.

We’re so happy to have our King David Family back together!
On Thursday, we commemorated Yom HaShoah with a meaningful student-led virtual assembly. We paused to remember the six million children, women, and men who were violently torn from us by the Nazis.

The commemoration began with a soulful performance of the Schindler’s List theme played on electric guitar by Grade 12 student, Casey Krombein. This was followed by a prayer, “Kel Ma’ale Rachamim”, led by Cantor Yaacov Orzech.

We were honoured to hear from Holocaust survivor Lilian Nemetz, who shared her family’s story with us. Hearing about the incomprehensible number of innocent lives lost is always heartbreaking. Lilian also reflected on the many acts of courage and resistance that live on through survivors, their descendants, and the many righteous among the nations who risked everything for their Jewish neighbours.

The students asked Lillian questions and commented how grateful they were to still have the opportunity to hear directly from survivors.
Before Pesach break, the Grade 12 Holocaust Studies class had the incredible opportunity to hear a presentation by another child survivor of the Holocaust: Sophie Fishman’s grandmother (Oma), Amalia Boe-Fishman (pictured right).

Sophie said after the presentation, “My grandmother shared her story of her experiences during the Holocaust and in hiding, to liberation and her life after the war. During the presentation, we were shown pictures of her extended family who didn’t survive, alongside many photos from her experiences in hiding. The class asked questions and were very interested to hear about her family’s experiences and feelings after the Holocaust. Thank you so much for presenting to our class, Oma: we are so appreciative!”
FEED – First Ever Everything Drive!
Grade 12 Student Council Members Max Laskin and Isaac Liedemann

Student Council has organized a succession of drives to help those in need, which they’ve called the First Ever Everything Drive (FEED).

FEED kicked off on Wednesday with a clothing drive, and students and staff brought in gently used clothing items, shoes, linens and more. We look forward to the Hygiene Drive on April 13 and the Food Drive on April 20!

A heartfelt thank you to Student Council for organizing this incredible initiative. It is a great way to lead into our Random Acts of Chesed (RAC) Week, which will begin on April 16.
We wanted to take a moment to wish our Head of School, Russ Klein, a Happy 60th Birthday! Russ protested, as he says he is really only 13 in King David years and thus, more appropriately, should be celebrating his second Bar Mitzvah. He also wanted to be sure we included our students who share his birthday today: Max Laskin (Grade 12) and Mhairi Hemingson (Grade 10). Happy birthday!

To honour this milestone, we asked Russ to tell us a story from his youth (since it was, after all, so long ago) and he obliged, so if you want to read more, please click here.
