The Social Studies 9 students have been studying the French Revolution for several weeks. Their learning culminated this week with groups of students presenting to their peers on a variety of topics surrounding the issues and events of the French Revolution. The presentations were shared in a “gallery walk” format, with projects spread throughout the Learning Lab and groups stopping at each exhibit to learn about the topic. Students had to think creatively and work collaboratively when preparing their presentations and utilized a variety of designs for their projects. They all did an excellent job, particularly when it came to thoroughly answering questions from their peers.

LESSONS FROM THE HOLOCAUST
On Wednesday, the Grade 12 Holocaust Studies class had the pleasure of listening to a presentation by Dr. Chris Friedrichs, professor emeritus of history at UBC. Dr. Friedrichs shared a story of the German boy, Walter Schreiber, and his experiences as a young German soldier during the Holocaust. We learned about how artifacts of Walter’s life were provided to the Frankfurt Museum, and an exhibit was then curated. During the presentation, we were shown photos of Walter throughout his life and were given an explanation of his family life alongside his experience as a Nazi. It was interesting to hear how Walter was heavily influenced by Nazism due to his father’s strong beliefs, and not his own personal opinions. Dr. Friedrichs also compared Walter’s life to Anne Frank’s by outlining some parallels of the two German citizen’s experiences growing up. We are so appreciative of the interesting and detailed presentation. Thank you, Dr. Friedrichs!
