L’HITRAOT GIL…

Gil Talmaciu
This week was bittersweet as we said l’hitraot to Gil Talmaciu. Gil has played an important role in the Resource and Skills team. His ability to support all students along with his warmth and kindness made him a popular member of King David’s faculty. Gil, we wish you great success as you move into your new career and look forward to seeing you when you visit!

We are excited to welcome back King David Alumnus, Felipe Goldbach. Felipe has joined the Resource and Skills team!

…HELLO FELIPE!

Felipe Goldbach Class of 2017
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Felipe immigrated to Vancouver in 2010 and eventually joined the King David family as an eighth grader in 2012. During his time as a King David student, Felipe also worked at the Jewish Community Center as a Swim Instructor/Lifeguard. He graduated in 2017 and began his university studies at the University of Victoria with a major in Computer Engineering. In addition to his major, Felipe has also been studying Astrophysics as a possible minor, as well as participating in UVic’s Rocketry Club. When not nose-deep in Engineering and Physics books, he likes to spend time with friends, either playing video games or heading to the gym for a good workout. Felipe is excited to be back at King David working with the Resource and Skills team as a Student Support Specialist.

HOMEMADE CHALLAH

How to Create Challah

As we head into the weekend and Shabbat with our families, Senior Food Service students Mattea Lewis, Grade 12, and Estie Kallner, Grade 11, created the video above on how to make challah with a recipe inspired by Chef Oren Giron.

Thanks to Mattea and Estie for their hard work, and to our Community Connections and Special Programs Counsellor, Jordana Corenblum, for helping with videography!
COLLABORATIVE ARTWORK

As a beginning-of-the-year project, each Art student was asked to create one leaf to contribute to a collaborative mural. They included elements of themselves in their work, and exercised free choice in designing and decorating their leaves. Materials and styles included collage, painting, drawing and sketching, and sculpture.  The leaves were then arranged together to create a beautiful collaborative tree. Well done, artists!
TEACHERS AS LEARNERS

Megan Neary, Johnny Seguin, and Tali Keselman continue rehearsing their Hebrew song after Cameron Metcalfe and Marie Vondracek left the group to teach their classes

During the first few months of the pandemic, when King David pivoted to remote learning, Tali Keselman, one of King David’s Hebrew teachers, reached out to our faculty and staff offering to teach them Hebrew. Teachers jumped at the opportunity as a way to keep connected, and these lessons continue. Johnny Seguin, Megan Neary, Cameron Metcalfe, and Marie Vondracek meet weekly, and yesterday’s lesson was learning a Hebrew song! Using a play on words, they have called their band כן דוד (Yes David)!

Hebrew Practice!

During lunch, Johnny and Cameron were also captured on video doing their Hebrew homework!

Community is built on solid partnerships like the one between King David High School and Jewish Federation. Working together enables us to do more.

When you support the community through the Federation Annual Campaign, you can direct 75% of your new gift or increase to King David High School. Just type in “King David High School” on the donation form when you make your gift online.

We, along with many other local community organizations,  are counting on Federation Annual Campaign “plus gifts” to support our work.

Shabbat Shalom!
