NEVER FORGET

On Tuesday afternoon, we held a virtual Yom Hashoah assembly, commemorating the six million Jews and 5 million others who were killed during the Holocaust.

The assembly was led by Grade 12 students Sagiv Fadida, Zevi Kline, and Emily Miller, who each read excerpts from survivor accounts while showing a slideshow of images of Jewish life before and during the Holocaust. The students also showed a portion of a video from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, which can be viewed by clicking here.

Rabbi Berger then read pieces of a prayer written for the Holocaust, before Emily led the school in a moment of silence.

You can hear Rabbi Berger’s reading in the video below.

OUR WORLD CLUB GOES ABROAD

On Tuesday, the Our World Club had a fabulous guest speaker from Italy. Grade 10 student Sara Bauman wrote a message to describe the experience.

"Guess who’s back, greener than ever? The Our World Club, King David’s local sustainability warriors! This Tuesday, we had the privilege of meeting with a special guest: Filippo! He lives in an eco-village in Sicily, Italy, and works hard to make living more sustainable for himself and his community. Filippo talked with us about permaculture, which is an extremely unique way to live. Permaculture focuses on living with sustainable practices, including farming and eco-friendly houses and infrastructure. One example of a design he is working on now features an air conditioner and heating system that requires no energy from fossil fuels, and relies completely on the earth’s natural, renewable resources. Not only is Filippo working on innovative practices, but the Our World Club has been doing their best to be environmentally conscious right from the comforts of their own houses! Members have been planting in home gardens, taking the time to learn how to recycle better, and researching what more can be done from home."

CALCULUS AND COVID-19

Eldad Haber, a King David parent and NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Computational Geoscience at UBC, is always willing to contribute to our student’s learning – from Israeli politics to Calculus, he challenges them. This week he gave a fantastic presentation to the Calculus students on modelling exponential functions using real COVID-19 data!
MAZAL TOV, ANA CLARA!

Grade 12 student, Ana Clara Feldman, is a recipient of the Hellmuth Scholarship at Huron University College at Western! This scholarship, valued at $30,000 (full tuition) over four years, is awarded to entering students who display outstanding academic achievement together with a strong record of extracurricular activities and community service.

Well done, Ana Clara! Your commitment to being involved in community, along with your strong work ethic, have paid off!
