HOW CAN WE HELP?

In these trying days we all need to support each other, so our question to you is: how can we help? This past week, Yaffa Housing Society reached out to us and we were only too happy to supply them with 160 rolls of toilet paper. We were also able to supply our hospitals with over 300 E95 masks (from our earthquake container). And of course we have reached out to our King David families to let them know we are here to assist them in the financial stress so many are facing right now.

After Pesach, we hope to begin coordinating with our students and staff to help out in our community. We are developing plans to link our students with residents in Louis Brier and Weinberg Residences, and to connect our students with younger children to provide "home study and mentoring" support.

We joined VTT in creating a directory of businesses in our community who would appreciate our support. Click here for the VTT-King David Business Directory.

We are sure there are many ways we can help build community with you; if you have any ideas, please let us know!
FOODS CLASS AT HOME

Marlowe recreates her sesames snacks!!

This week, senior Foods students were tasked with taking their favourite store-bought snack, decoding the mysterious ingredients on the back (those that no one really understands), understanding their function within the snack (is it an emulsifier, does it add colour/flavour, etc.) and then rewriting the recipe with ingredients found at home and recreate it.

The students’ results were incredibly impressive. Marlowe Zimmerman, Grade 12, even created a YouTube video, which can be enjoyed above.
OUR WORLD CLUB ONLINE

King David’s sustainability warriors, the Our World Club, met at their regularly scheduled time on Tuesday at lunch. The students were all smiles as they showed each other their assortment of edible and decorative plants inside and outside their homes. Mr. Cooper introduced them to his garden, where new life is just starting to peek its green heads through the cool soil. Even Mr. Klein and Mr. Seguin stopped by to share in the gathering. Next week, Our World Club member, Sara, will be discussing her soft-plastic separating strategy and a special guest will be joining the club to discuss plant identification and care.

HELP AVAILABLE FOR PESACH SEDERS

We will all be celebrating the upcoming festival of freedom with a different perspective this year. The current reality is that many of us will be unable to spend Passover with our extended family and friends or spend the holiday time travelling this year to a distant, exotic location. This may mean that you are running a Seder by yourself for the very first time. You are not alone! These events have encouraged us to expand our reach and empower each person to create a Seder that is meaningful to him or her. We at King David are committed to supporting you to ensure that meaningful Passover Seder.

Together with Chabad Lubavitch BC, Chabad Richmond, and The Community Kollel, we are pleased to offer everything you need for a stress-free, traditional, and inspiring Seder at home. In a Passover Seder box, they will provide you with wine, Shmura matzah, Haggadah, Seder plates and all Seder plate items and wine cups, as well as a full festive kosher for Passover meal catered by Maple Grill.

In addition, we will also provide online classes, resources and tutorials to assist you in preparing to run the Passover Seder at home. Everything will be conveniently packaged and ready for pick up before Passover. In order to make sure that we have enough Passover supplies, kosher wine, and Shmura matzah, we request that you pre-order by Sunday, March 29. For anyone unable to afford the cost, grants are available that will cover the cost of the Seder package.

If you don’t require a Seder box but just want Haggadahs or some Passover advice, feel free to be in contact with me at or 604-323-6308. According to kabbalah, Matzah is the "bread of healing." We hope and pray that this Passover brings a quick recovery for all those that need, and only good health for all.

Al the best and praying for refuah shlema for us and world,
Rabbi Stephen Berger

AN EPIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS

We will see how the holidays are not celebrations of the past, but are actually ongoing expressions of our history. We will understand the holidays through the drama of our history. Many Jews may feel that Judaism and Jewish life are a foreign and foreboding domain. After this session, you will feel at ease, like an insider, with all of the holidays, and you will be challenged to think, and think again: not only about the holidays, but about life itself.

WHAT’S THE THEME OF PASSOVER? (AND DON’T SAY FREEDOM!)

What are the major themes, the big ideas of Pesach? The ones you have to relate to at the Seder? These ideas are so important that if you only spent time discussing why there are four sons, or trying to hide the afikoman, or convincing your youngest to sing the Mah Nishtanah, you kind of missed the point. Let’s explore different themes together to make this year’s Seder interesting, rich, and meaningful (oh yeah, and fun!)
DO YOU HAVE A PESACH RECIPE TO SHARE?

As Pesach approaches and we face holding Seders while social distancing, our students have been asking our Foods teacher, Hilit Nurick for recipes. So Hilit suggested we start a community Pesach Cookbook!

Please click here to add a favourite recipe you’d like to share. Deadline for recipe submission is Monday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m.

Shabbat Shalom!
