On Wednesday, our Grade 9 students heard from Vancouver Coastal Health Tobacco Reduction Coordinator, Brandon Biln, on the topic of vaping. Brandon led us through an engaging workshop on many aspects of vaping/nicotine and how it can affect our health if we choose to use. He touched on a brief history of cigarettes, some statistics, and how smoking cigarettes has decreased so much among Canadian youth over many decades. In 2003, a "vapor" device was invented to help cigarette smokers quit the habit. However, the tobacco industry now owns the product and sells these "vaporizers" and markets them to children, youth, and adults with the use of flavours, social media influencers, ads, and the technological "I need it" vibe.
To learn more about what Canadian laws protect youth from vaping, using these products, or cessation/withdrawal help, please visit www.canada.ca/vaping.info. In addition, Vancouver General Hospital has a very successful smoking cessation program for youth and adults.

"This week the Grade 11/12 Holocaust and Genocide Studies class had the pleasure of hearing from second generation Holocaust survivor, Jeff Balin. Mr. Balin told the class about his parents’ experiences and how they built a life afterwards. After the horrors she endure in the Holocaust, his mother moved to Israel, joined the IDF and fought in the war for independence. His father came close to death in concentration camps and death marches, but fought to survive. He eventually became an electrical engineer and was part of the team who created the original black box technology that is used in planes today. Mr. Balin also shared how being born 20 years after the Holocaust had a large impact on his childhood. He has memories of seeing graphic images on television at only 5 years old. Growing up, he developed a fear that the Holocaust would happen again, and now, with anti-Semitism on the rise, he believes it is important to use the many resources available to us to fight back. Our class would like to thank Mr. Balin for coming and sharing his family’s meaningful story with us."

– Ella Pekarsky, Grade 12

This week, our Grade 11 and 12 students were fortunate to hear Becca Wertman speak.
Becca, originally from Vancouver, made Aliyah and lives in Israel where she is Managing Editor and Canada Liaison at NGO Monitor. She works tirelessly on behalf of Israel and Jews everywhere and has so much experience and wisdom. Becca shared information and discussed the work she is doing across many areas – her work at the UN, what it will be like to be on university campuses for our current Grade 12s next year, what the world thinks about Israel, and what’s going on in Israel. Here is one of the many videos where Becca is speaking before the UN Human Rights Council.

This week, both our Junior and Senior Boys Basketball teams won their respective GVISAA Championships. This is the second year in a row that both teams have won! Congratulations, boys!
