Parsha: Vayera: Genesis 18:1 – 22:24

King David continues to be inspired by former student Gabrielle Isserow z"l and her inherent ability to always be kind and inclusive. Her classmate and friend, Marcos Mogyoros, was unable to be present but sent a video (click here) sharing how Gabi’s example still shines brightly, and encouraging our students to follow in her footsteps and "be a light".

For the ninth year, our Random Acts of Chesed (RAC) Week was planned and implemented by a capable group of Grade 12 students under the guidance of Ellia Belson, our Director of Jewish Life and Events. "Be a Light in the Dark" was the theme that our Grade 12 RAC Committee – Jayson Armstrong, Romy Ashkenazy, Teah Bakonyi, Hannah Casseres, Melila Chesick-Gordis, Sagiv Fadida, Jordana Gaerber, Noa Haber, Oren Mathews, Emily Miller, Jessie Miller, Camille Millman, Neev Mizrachi, Ace Murphy, Ella Pekarsky, Rachel Porte, Rachel Rosenblatt, Ezra Tischler, and Marlowe Zimmerman – envisioned. They expressed their wish that King David would feel like a family for every single student who attends our school. With the growth of the school, they wanted to ensure that everyone, especially students in the younger grades, feels supported here. As it sadly is a common occurrence for teens to face stress, anxiety, and depression, the RAC Committee wanted to emphasize that, as a community, we are all here to support one another.
In keeping with the theme, the atrium was darkened and lit up with fairy lights and glow-in-the-dark decor. Oren Mathews’s vision came to life! our wonderful emcees, Teah Bakonyi and Zevi Kline, guided the audience through an explanation of this year’s theme and special activities for the day. Our shinshinit, Camille Amir, spoke about Krembo Wings, an organization she volunteered with in Israel that facilitates activities for youth – both typical and with disabilities. We are also raising funds for the BC Children’s Hospital Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre.
Ella Pekarsky and Melila Chesick-Gordis gave a moving speech about the struggles we all face, and how we can be there for each other. Teah Bakonyi, Zevi Kline, Camille Millman, and others contributed to a group video of our own students talking about kindness and RAC Week. Finally, Marlowe Zimmerman starred in an enthusiastic video with some guidelines for how to behave during the RAC Race. Our ceremony concluded with a moving, school-wide rendition of "Lean on Me".
This year, each TAG group went out to participate in having the most meaningful moments, demonstrating random acts of chesed. It was set up as a RAC Race – Grade 12 students were strategically placed along the Canada Line in Vancouver and Richmond. Groups were given challenges to complete with as much enthusiasm and authenticity as possible. A huge thank you to Jessie Miller who, with some help from Jordana Corenblum, organized the race. The winning team will be rewarded with an amazing non-uniform day with a pizza and ice cream party!
Laughter and smiles were evident as students returned from their outings and were treated to a BBQ lunch, generously provided by our fantastic PAC volunteers. After lunch, students once again gathered in their TAG Groups to prepare their presentations about their acts of kindness. We concluded our day with presentations of each group’s highlights and a SnapChat story of everyone’s incredible experiences. Thank you Ace Murphy and Oren Mathews for managing the SnapChats with such focus!

Our thanks to the Isserow family for providing support for this special event.
