WELCOME BACK!

Tuesday morning was filled with lots of laughter, and excitement as our King David Family finally returned from summer break to kick off a brand new school year. Our Grade 12 class was on hand to greet all our new and returning students and welcome them into the building with bright posters and even brighter smiles – plus some excellent music!

We began our first day with a school-wide assembly, with an introduction from Mr. Monchamp, our Deputy Head of School. Rabbi Berger then said a few words before calling up some volunteers to blow the shofar. The shofar is central to Rosh Hashanah and relevant on the first day of the new school year as it is a literal "wake-up call," a reminder to pay better attention during the coming year to the most important things in life, things we have perhaps neglected in the past year.

As our older students went to their classes, our Grade 8 students had an orientation to introduce them to life and learning at King David. They had the opportunity to hear from Mr. Dichter, our Outdoor Education and Social Studies teacher, and Lu Winters, our Wellness Counsellor, who helped talk them through what their school days would look like, including giving information about their lockers, class schedules, uniforms, technology, and more.

They were then given a scavenger hunt to complete, full of tasks designed to get them exploring the school and making connections with staff members and their peers, as well as to get them laughing!

We are so excited to have this new crew of Grade 8s to join our King David Family, and we look forward to the year to come!
COCKTAILS AND CONVERSATION

On Thursday evening, King David hosted our annual New Parent Cocktails and Conversation evening to introduce all newbies to the ins-and-outs of King David.

While it may be useful to know how to stay informed, who to contact, how to navigate PCR and Moodle, and what King David’s philosophy is about homework, hosting the evening serves a much more important purpose. It gives us the opportunity to create a sense of connection and community for our new families. With 55 parents and 10 staff members in attendance, there was much laughter, some eating, and a whole lot of information shared!
TAG TALKS

On Friday morning, King David staff and students gathered in the atrium for the first TAG session of the new school year.

The assembly started off with a wonderful video about preparing our children for the world by educating the heart. Click here to watch the video.

Lu Winters introduced us to this year’s ongoing TAG program – TAG Talks. Every TAG will feature staff or students speaking to their groups about something they are passionate about, to help them connect with each other and grow accustomed to speaking to groups.

Mr. Dichter started us off with our very first TAG Talk, where he opened up about one of his favourite movies, Inside Out, and how that movie encouraged him to address his anxiety and be vulnerable to others in order to help him deal with it.

Then Lu gave her own TAG Talk, talking about how she became a counsellor, and the ways in which Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) shows up in our everyday lives.

We are looking forward to a year of social emotional growth and to creating strong connections within the school and out in the community.
MAZAL TOV, MR. DIAMOND!

As this is our first newsletter of the new school year, we would be remiss in not congratulating our benefactor, Gordon Diamond, who at the end of last June was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada. The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest achievements: presented by the governor general, the Order honours people whose service shapes our society, whose innovations ignite our imaginations, and whose compassion unites our communities. Kol Hakavod to Mr. Diamond and the entire Diamond Family for this well-deserved honour!

Shabbat Shalom!
