On Wednesday evening, more than 520 people gathered at Beth Israel to celebrate King David’s Bar Mitzvah! It was a wonderful night, full of lively music, colourful characters, and no shortage of wonderful food and laughter! Despite a few technical sound issues (was Mr. Klein really voiceless?) and a production that was a wee bit too long (past most parents’ bedtime), the energy in the room was outstanding as we celebrated this Simcha.

King David students were the shining stars of the night, taking part in the show in a number of creative ways. Our Grade 9 class performed a beautiful cover of "On Top of the World" by Imagine Dragons, accompanied by a music video that was recorded earlier this year at 604 Records – click here for the video. We were treated to a performance called "50 Fingers and a Bucket" – a group of student "buskers", Landon Slobin, Gabe Stern, Jillian Marks, Devin Gorski, and Jonathan Malowicki, sharing one piano (and a bucket drum!) alongside Music Teacher, Johnny Seguin. Throughout the course of the evening, the crowd was also wowed by a trio of dancers, Zoe Shnier, Gali Goldman, and Elise Jampolsky, a pair of rappers, Avichai Mattuck and Camille Millman, and even a solo violinist, Shaina Gurevich.
Head of School, Russ Klein, kicked off the evening’s performances, explaining how the prestigious – if somewhat unconventional – Royal Chelmkin family had offered their services in hosting our Bar Mitzvah. More than half the staff took part in fun performances. They all showed off their acting chops, including our Business Education Teacher, David Gorski, as the Chelmkin King, a variety of teachers and faculty as passengers and suspects in the short film "Who Stole the Matzah on the Oy Yentl Express?", and Rabbi Berger as, well… himself. There were even some surprise performances from our Deputy Head of School, Alex Monchamp!

We extend a heartfelt thank you to all the students, parents, and staff who volunteered so much of their time and energy to create a beautiful evening. A special thank you to our co-chairs for the evening, Chana Charach and Michelle Guez, and their team of volunteers: Dina Badour, Meirav David, Leana Gaerber, Alain Guez, Lindsay Isserow, Ruth Jankelowitz, Simone Kallner, Tracey Klass, Megan Laskin, Sharon McNamara, Jacci Sandler, Iris Sharir, and Michele Zychlinski. We couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you to the broader community for coming out to celebrate with us.

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Shavuot Sameach!
