A Message for Yom Kippur

Rabbi Stephen Berger

We often hear the saying “it’s the thought that counts.” Well not according to Judaism’s greatest philosopher Moshe Maimonides (the Rambam).

He writes that when it comes to repentance and atonement (teshuva) there are four components. The first is to no longer commit the sin. The second is to regret what you did in the past and the third is to commit not to do it in the future. The fourth is to confess aloud to whomever you offended.

Summer Learning

Anna-Mae Wiesenthal
My holidays began with a short but impressive few days spent in Toronto, along with my colleague Dorin Eilon-Heiber, at the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem Alumni Educator’s conference, the first conference of Canadian Shoah educators.
This conference was a follow-up to conferences held for educators at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, one of which I attended during the last winter break. The conference was impressive. It was well organized, a tremendous resource for meaningful and engaging classroom curriculum, and an opportunity to connect with other educators. On a more personal level, it helped me to shape an appreciation for what it means to be someone who teaches the Holocaust.
