Model UN
What is Model United Nations (MUN)?
A MUN brings students together to simulate the activities of the United Nations. The conference allows participants to learn about the countries they are assigned to represent, in addition to gaining an understanding of international relations. Students do their own preparatory research in advance, and then debate the issues in question at the conference, by playing the role of their country's representative. Participants learn to debate, negotiate, represent views they may not personally advocate, as well as to make informed decisions quickly while under pressure.

A Significant and “Worldly” Experience:
I hadn’t thought it was possible to experience such a vast variety of global perspectives by staying within the Canadian borders. I met teenage delegates from both the USA and Canada, but upon entry into the meetings I saw alternate perspectives and issues posed by delegates from places such as China, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Brazil, Chile, and Qatar. This was my second year at the Jewish Canadian Youth Model United Nations (JCYMUN) in Montreal, Canada yet the experience was completely different than the first. Issues brought up by my committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) were problems I knew existed but not to the extent of which they occur today. We discussed epidemics and world involvement in the case of one occurring. When SARS hit Canada, the world was unsure of how to react; but with the efforts of the United Nations and their initiatives it provides worldwide relief in an organized manner. Without leadership on global health matters our world would be in chaos. “The world desperately needs a corrective strategy. A world that is greatly out of balance in matters of health is a world that is neither stable nor secure”- Dr. Margaret Chan; Director General of WHO. This week made me hopeful for the future, through envisioning future world leaders at work.
