=  A Moving Sukkot and Simchat Torah Celebration!

Welcoming guests is one of the mitzvot of Sukkot and we were honoured to welcome both junior and senior members of our community this week!

On Tuesday, prechoolers from the JCC, arrived in their ‘muddy buddy’ waterproof gear to sit in our sukkah and hear Rabbi Berger recite the blessings with the Lulav and Etrog – all this during a downpour! We moved into the atrium where they were treated to a story by Rabbi Berger and songs played by one of our school bands.

On Wednesday, grandparents of current students were invited to celebrate Sukkot with us and we had the most beautiful time together. We met in the Sukkah where we heard from Rabbi Berger that the Sukkah is one of the only times where we can perform a mitzvah with our whole bodies, simply by sitting! The grandchildren of our visitors then enjoyed a delicious tea prepared and served by Hilit Nurick and her talented group of Foods students. Thank you too, to Diana and Maya our shinshiniot, for organizing a though provoking activity and sharing how they celebrated the chag in Israel.

Our time together was not over just yet! It was time to celebrate the holiday of Simchat Torah and share the joy we feel at having completed reading all the chapters in the Torah for a full year cycle.

We marked the holiday with students sharing what Torah means to them, a reading of the final chapter in the Torah, a calling up of all the Grade 8 students to recite the blessings and to receive blessings for their years at King David High School.

This year, in honour of our 13th year we also blessed our Grade 8 students as our Bar Mitzvah children and as is traditional, once they had been called up to the Torah, we shouted Mazal Tov, threw candies at them and danced with the Torah to music played by Johnny Seguin’s amazing King David Jazz Band.

If you or someone you know has a child entering Grade 8 through 11 next year, this evening is not to be missed!

The King David Open House is one of the best opportunities for prospective parents and students to discover why our families choose King David. During the evening, families will be welcomed by our Head of School, Russ Klein, hear from students and alumni, and explore the school during an interactive tour. In our classrooms, students will be conducting science experiments, debating in Judaic Studies, and making delicious treats for you in the Foods room!

Everyone is welcome! Please share!
