Weekly Newsletter – September 29, 2017

September 29, 2017  / 9 Tishrei 5778

    Shabbat Begins: 6:37 p.m.   Shabbat Ends: 7:39 p.m.

Left: Isaac Liedemann and Benjy Kraft, Grade 9, chopping fruit for making jam.
Right: Noah Levinkind and Aislin Murphy, Grade 10, making cookie dough.

King David has become known for the food prepared by students for many school events. This week, students have been busy prepping for our annual Grandparents’ Tea and Sukkot celebrations, and making cookies for student groups to take with them when volunteering on the Downtown Eastside at the First United Church.

Left: Brad Kahn, Grade 12, shapes cookies before baking.
Right: Noa Platner and Rachel Shtrambrant, Grade 12, picked figs from our garden to make jam for the Grandparents’ Tea.

We are so excited to have the two new scoreboards at the JCC. This will benefit our GVISAA league athletic sports play for all of our extracurricular teams who play at the JCC!

Now players, scorekeepers, and officials will be able to see any game information from their benches, and from both sides of the JCC gym. We are grateful to those who made these new scoreboards possible. The King David branding on the main scoreboard looks awesome and let’s everyone know that the JCC is the home of the King David Lions and Vancouver JCC Maccabi. Gone are the days of burnt out light bulbs!

Thank you Kevington Building Corporation!

With a magnitude of 7.1,
the devastating earthquake that hit Mexico was powerful enough to level buildings in Mexico City. Many families in Vancouver have been affected by this tragedy, including four current King David families and many alumni families. These families have had their elderly parents displaced, lost all possessions in buildings they cannot enter and had their entire lives turned upside down.

It is at times like these that we stand together, and King David is calling on our community to help us aid the many people so desperately affected by this devastating event.

Ways to help:
  1. Make a donation. Cadena (click here for its story) is an organization whose mission is to directly assist populations affected by natural disasters or emergencies of any kind, promoting the spirit of the Jewish Community. To make a donation, click here.
  2. Get your car washed! Sunday, October 1 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Save-on-Foods 3535 West 41st Avenue. All proceeds will be sent to Mexico.

We want to say thank you. Thank you to all who have supported us in the past, helping us grow into a leader of Jewish education in our community. Thank you to those who are committed to securing Jewish education for future generations.

If you or someone you know has a child entering Grade 8 through 11
next year, this evening is not to be missed!

The King David Open House is one of the best opportunities for prospective parents and students to discover why our families choose King David. During the evening, families will be welcomed by our Head of School, Russ Klein, hear from students and alumni, and explore the school during an interactive tour. In our classrooms, students will be conducting science experiments, debating in Judaic Studies, and making delicious treats for you in the Foods room!

Everyone is welcome! Please share!

Arielle Zabek and Yael Toyber, Grade 11, page through the yearbook.

Yearbooks are available for collection from the school office.

If you are near, stop by to pick one up – if not, ask your parents to collect one for you.
