Beth Israel was filled with over 500 guests to celebrate King David and hear Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of How to Raise an Adult, share her passion for parenting and raising children into adults. Through her inspirational, humourous, and heartfelt presentation, Julie shared her experiences and observations on the dramatic rise in "over-parenting". Her message clearly resonated with the audience as she encouraged them to consider fundamental questions: do we do too much for our kids? And what can we do to ensure we are raising resilient, well-rounded adults?
In his address to the audience, Head of School Russ Klein noted,
"Julie and King David are so aligned in our visions for what we want for our kids. Our goal is for students to leave King David with real tools so they will be able to persevere, deal with adversity, and become self-reliant."
The evening also showcased the vibrant life of our school – seen in the video below -and a collection of musical performances, which included our Grade 10 Jazz Band and a surprise musical finale, where a group of eight students seated throughout the audience sang an emotional rendition of "Greatest Love of All"!

A Bonding Retreat!

Paddleboarding at Jericho Beach

This week our Grade 11 and 12 students participated in the first Senior student retreat. With lots of student consultation, it was decided that this was a unique opportunity to explore some of the amazing activities that make Vancouver such a great place to live. Students took part in numerous activities on Monday and Tuesday, including a 40-person game of laser tag, hiking in Lynn Valley, an afternoon at Granville Island, stand up paddleboarding and kayaking at Jericho Beach, a movie night at school, and high ropes at UBC. Student Council took part in planning the two days, which included a very special breakfast prepared by Hilit and many student volunteers. It was a great event as the students had the chance to relax, bond, and have some fun before the end of the school year.
