We Will Remember

Students entered the atrium silently grade by grade, taking a seat and waiting for the Yom Hashoah ceremony to begin. Yarhtzeit candles were lit by Holocaust survivor, Robbie Waisman, and Grade 12 students, and were walked down the path between the chairs and placed on a table at the front. Thank you to Cantor Yaakov Orzech for his beautiful and heart-wrenching chanting of El Malei Rachamim.

The assembly was led by Grade 12 students, and our Drama 9 students read poems. This year, we welcomed students from Sir Charles Tupper and Prince of Wales Secondary Schools.

The atrium was filled with a reflective and sombre silence as we listened to the experiences of Robbie Waisman. When Robbie was liberated in the concentration camp of Buchenwald on April 11, 1945 at the age of fourteen, his immediate concern was to be reunited with his family. At that time he was not yet aware of the enormity of the Holocaust or of the extent of the losses.

During the war, many of the children had promised their elders that should they survive, they would tell the world about what had happened. Robbie did that on Monday, and we were all moved by his story. Students asked many poignant questions before silently leaving the atrium to return to classes.

Thank you to Anna-Mae Wiesenthal and Aron Rosenberg for organizing such an impactful and meaningful assembly.

Shayna, Grade 12, listens attentively as Robbie Waisman respomds to her question.
The Big Reveal!

Renovation Reveal

We know it’s not the spaces, it’s the people – and the students and faculty are excited to use the spaces next week!
Earth Day

Talia, Grade 12, and Micaela, Grade 9, sort through garbage during the audit.

On Thursday, the King David Green Team participated in a garbage audit to analyze the ways we could reduce the garbage production in our school. We discovered that 54% of the waste in our school’s garbage could be either recycled or put into the organic waste bin. The Green Team will be working with our school community to educate our students and to eventually become a zero-waste school.

On Friday, the Green Team celebrated Earth Day by leading an assembly during our weekly TAG time. They organized a school-wide green-themed Kahoot, discussed the garbage audit, and explained ways to reduce our garbage production. The assembly ended with every student making a pledge to be more environmentally friendly.

Happenings this Week

Milena, Jaqueline, and Adam, Grade 11, serve as docents for the exhibit on loan from the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. Throughout the week, each grade has had the opportunity to learn from their peers.
The Grade 12 class prepare a song for Yom Ha’atzmaut next week.

Our atrium was filled with beautiful sounds as students from Vancouver Talmud Torah and Richmond Jewish Day School rehearsed with Jane Bordeaux, the hottest new Israeli band featured at this year’s JFGV Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration.
