Weekly Newsletter – March 24, 2017

March 24, 2017  /  26 Adar 5777
Shabbat Begins: 7:14 p.m.       Parsha: Vayak’hel-Pekudei
   Shabbat Ends: 8:21 p.m.         Exodus 35:1-40:38

On Sunday, our eighth Grade 8 delegation (52 students and 6 chaperones this year!) will be boarding an early morning flight bound for Toronto, and then on to Israel! We look forward to hearing from the group as they travel to and through the Land of Milk and Honey!

"For the past seven years we have taken our Grade 8 students to Israel, so every student in our building who entered King David in Grade 8 has had the opportunity to travel to Israel and to get a deeper understanding of why they are attending a Jewish school, and why Eretz Israel is so important to all of us. With this year’s delegation, a total of over 262 Grade 8 King David students will have traveled with us; it is the largest program of its kind in North America! Thank you to the Jewish Federation and the Gesher Chai Committee, who help make these trips possible for all of our students, both financially and logistically."
~ Russ Klein, Head of School

Partnering with First United Church

Our first group of student volunteers: Jeanette and Daniela, Grade 11, Talya, Grade 12, and Giovanna, Grade 10, with Ellia Belson, Director of Jewish Life and Events

This week, student volunteers made their first visit to the First United Church Soup Kitchen. Thanks to our parent volunteers and Foods Teacher, Hilit Nurick, the students had a delicious banana bread dessert to share with clients for lunch. The Soup Kitchen clients were so appreciative, and our students found it to be an important and rewarding experience.
This pilot project went smoothly, and the First United Church is looking forward to having us volunteer on a regular basis. Starting in September 2017, King David will have students volunteers heading out every two weeks with baked goods to distribute. We are so excited about this new partnership!
Keeping Active

Last week, the Grade 9 Boys PE class went ice skating at Hillcrest Centre, and had a blast!

On Tuesday, both the Grade 8 Boys and Grade 8 Girls PE classes had amazing tug-of-war competitions!

Literacy Awareness Day

Every day, we read things and take our literacy for granted. The Social Justice 12 class would like to bring awareness to literacy and access to education in developing countries. On March 31, we will be holding a Literacy Awareness Day, through the organizations Room to Read and The Walking School Bus. During the week (March 31-April 7), we will be collecting new and lightly used books to bring to those in need. On Literacy Awareness Day, students will have the opportunity to record audiobooks for The Walking School Bus during lunch. These audiobooks will help improve fluency globally, as fluency is the highest predictor of success. As well, we will be exploring and discussing the challenge of illiteracy during TAG (Teacher Advisory Groups). Finally, Literacy Day will be a themed costume day, where each student is encouraged to dress as their favourite book character. The student with the best costume from each grade will win a prize. Everyone is asked to bring a toonie for Room to Read, or a book for the book drive, on March 31. We look forward to working with you to improve literacy worldwide!
