A Taste of Law

L-R: Jonathan, Justin, Noah, Almog, Dalia, Mr. Gorski, Yuval, Josh, and Ben

On Wednesday the Law 12 class visited the BC Supreme Court for a morning of court watching that included, among other cases, the first day of a double murder trial. The students were also given the invaluable experience of a question-and-answer session with Justice Smith of the Supreme Court.

"I really enjoyed seeing the aspects and procedures of law that we have been learning about in class at play in the real judicial system. It was very interesting to listen to various trial proceedings and see the first-hand impact and power of the law. This experience emphasized for me the human element of the legal system and the effect it has both positively and negatively on people’s lives. The immense responsibility that judges have in interpreting the law has made me realize how lucky we all are, as Canadian citizens, to live in a country that both values and upholds an efficient and impartial justice system."
~ Yuval, Grade 12
Mental Health Awareness

January 25 was Bell Let’s Talk Day which is an annual national movement to raise awareness, and end the stigma around mental illness. In the Grade 8 Social Studies class, Mr. Dichter and School Counsellor, Lu Winters, led a session on what this day meant for them and others, and how they can contribute to the conversation.
Cross-Age Peer Mentors

Romy and Neev, Grade 9, have fun with students at Admiral Seymour Elementary School.

For the past few years we have given our students the opportunity to be peer-mentors at a number of Vancouver inner-city schools. Once a week, students from Grade 9, 10, or 11, accompanied by a staff member and parent, spend an hour volunteering in a classroom. This week, Grade 9 students played games and interacted with second and fourth grade students at Admiral Seymour Elementary School. Research shows that simple interactions like this boost academic connectedness and self-esteem for both groups of students. Our King David students are eager to participate and after their visit this week reported how good this small act of kindness made them feel.
