RINO (RAC Is Not Over)

While the week of Random Acts of Chesed is over, the students are motivated by the experiences to continue spreading kindness. Today, during TAG, each group discussed ways to continue. Here are some ideas generated by one of the groups:
  • Give a compliment
  • Support the learning of others
  • Volunteer at the Food Bank
  • Help others with tasks
  • Open and hold doors for friends
  • Talk to someone who is alone
  • Participate in Spirit Week with enthusiasm
  • Write a poem or a song for someone
This video was created by Talya, Grade 12, after RAC Week.

Student Leadership

A lunchtime meeting to plan Spirit Week

King David’s Student Council is an assembly of students from every grade who work to promote school spirit and function as the voice of the students to the school administration.

This year, we have one of our biggest Student Councils to date – in fact, there are 37 members. Part of the reason for this is our unique approach to Student Council. Rather than having an elected council, all students from all grades can serve on Student Council if they wish to do so. Our thinking is that if we have a student willing to volunteer and commit time and energy for the betterment of their school, they should be allowed to do so. Therefore, we don’t have student elections, and the students choose the structure of how the Council works.

Within our Council there is a junior and senior leadership team, along with teams that look after various functions such as finance, communication, research, and service/volunteering.

Student Council has been working well together, and will launch their first big event of the school year with next week’s Spirit Week. It promises to be a lot of fun!
Experiential Learning

We were fascinated to see a sculpture of that size made out of items generally thrown away.
~ Daniel, Grade 12

Grades 10, 11, and 12 Visual Art students visited the Vancouver Art Gallery on Thursday to view two contrasting exhibitions. Looking at the diverse work in the group show Juxtapose x Superflat, our students had the chance to see complex artwork made by contemporary artists from around the Pacific Rim who are wrestling with global issues. Walker Evans: Depth of Field features the life’s work of a significant figure in American documentary photography. Documenting the vernacular landscape, Evans’ work captured 20th century social, economic, and political issues that he encountered across the country. Students looked at both exhibitions while considering the intent of these artworks, and how they might inspire their personal creations.
