Welcome! Bruchim Habaim, Har Vagai!

The gesher chai (living bridge) that was started last year when King David’s Grade 8 students visited Israel continued in Canada last night with the arrival of sixteen Har Vagai students and two teachers. These students hosted King David students, and the Canadian families are thrilled to be able to reciprocate their hospitality! They will be with us for nine days and their itinerary is full for the time they spend in Vancouver!

A warm welcome awaited them.

Reconnecting after seven months!

"We were so excited to be welcoming the Grade 9 students from Israel. We were recognized by one of the girls, and she told us that our Israeli friends sent her with a message and a package full of the Israeli candy we loved. We were so surprised and it made our day! We miss you, Shiraz and Yahav!"
Hanah, Maya, and Zoe, Grade 10

Creating this connection would not be possible without the support of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver and the Partnership 2Gether program that links Canada and the Galilee Panhandle together.
Learning by Doing

If you tried to describe the new BC Curriculum in three words, it might be "learn by doing". It may seem a little too simple, but consider how you best learn or how you work in your day-to-day life. You’re likely not sitting in a room with 20 other people but working in isolation.
Doing is not passive; it’s active, and often can involve other people, problems, and set-backs. And when you put others and set-backs into the mix, that’s not only where real learning (learning that sticks) takes place, it’s also where skills are developed. Skills they will need for all aspects of their future, from collaboration and critical thinking to personal and social skills.
Below is a small snapshot from this week showing how our students are "learning by doing" in multiple curricular areas.

Grade 8 – Collaboration with hands-on learning
Grade 8 Science students worked collaboratively to demonstrate their existing knowledge of the human body. The students worked on posters in small groups to draw, colour, and label as many organs as they could remember. At the end of the lesson, students presented their posters to the class.

While studying Mishna 2 in Pirkei Avot (Shimon Hatzaddik used to say "Upon three things does the world stand: 1. Upon Torah: 2. Upon (Divine) service and 3. Upon deeds of kindness), students use a tripod to answer the question often asked by Rabbis; regarding having balance with just two pillars.

Grade 10 – Students work together to prepare for a Math quiz

Grade 12 – A collaborative, problem-solving Calculus class
