A Sneak Peek …
"Quiet – this is a library" are words that will no longer be heard in the space formerly occupied by the King David library, which is currently under renovation.  We thought we would share a sneak peek of the transformation that will be occurring over the next few months as we create a vibrant centre for student activity and collaboration: a place that will have students exploring answers to their questions, and where the BC New Curriculum will be implemented in a modern learning centre.

Schools are in the middle of a total revolution when it comes to libraries as we transition from a print-based culture to a digitally-based culture. At many schools, as at King David, the library is one of the largest spaces in the building – and the most underused. To best utilize the space to excite students and stimulate curiosity, learning libraries are becoming information centres, learning labs, and technology centres. The librarian is the Digital Resource expert – teaching online literacy and critical-thinking skills, as well as how to access information in journals and publications from online databases. Libraries are no longer quiet spaces to read; they are vibrant places to talk with peers and teachers, and engage in powerful questions and research.
Totally re-designed, as shown in the pictures, our new space will contain four glass-walled rooms with whiteboards and media screens for collaborative work. There will also be two teacher offices and a small classroom. The south wall will keep its many bookshelves, but these will be partially hidden behind sliding whiteboards for students to work on. There will also be media screens for group presentations in the larger open area. The southeast corner will be a comfortable reading and work area. The central parts of the room will consist of mobile furniture and dividers so that the room can be configured in multiple ways and used by multiple users simultaneously. We are looking to purchase wonderful furniture for the library, so if you would like to help us make it spectacular, please do give us a call.

As for the books – we love them, both print and digital. Our new space will still have hundreds of books, for reading and for reference (along with many Judaic Studies books that will be shelved on the upper floor of the school).

We are looking forward to opening in the new year.

Problem Solving…

Nathan, Solly, and Samson, Grade 10, work together to build an effective robot. Encountering a problem, they discuss a solution with Eli Landa, Class of 2014, who supports our Robotics program.

Grade 12 students discuss how best to create a tree from a roll of cardboard. RAC (Random Acts of Chesed) Week preparations have begun!
Discover why so many families choose King David!

If you or someone you know has a child entering Grade 8 through 11
next year, this evening is not to be missed!

The King David Open House is one of the best opportunities for prospective parents and students to discover why our families choose King David. During the evening, families will be welcomed by our Head of School, Russ Klein, hear from students and alumni, and explore the school during an interactive tour. In our classrooms, students will be conducting science experiments, debating in Judaic Studies, and making delicious treats for you in the Foods room!

Everyone is welcome! Please share!

Shabbat Shalom!
