King David Remembers

Students entered the Atrium silently grade by grade, taking a seat and waiting for the Yom Hashoah ceremony to begin. Yarhtzeit candles were lit by Grade 12 students and walked down the path between the chairs and placed on a table at the front. Thank you to Cantor Yaakov Orzech for his beautiful and heart wrenching chanting of El Malei Rachamim.

The assembly was led by Grade 12 students – Adi, Aria, Gil, Hana, Joelle, Matt, Maya, Noga, Nufar, Rina, Shane and Shmuel.

Our Drama 9 class was presented with poems written by A. Peter Gary, a holocaust survivor living in Victoria. Students were challenged to turn these poems into theatrical scenes using their voices and movement to explore the emotions, struggles, and understandings included in his poetry. The resulting performance helped deepen the students’ understanding of the Shoah while sharing their exploration with the rest of the school.

The Atrium was filled with a reflective and sombre silence as we listened to the experiences of Lillian Boraks-Nemetz. Lillian was born in Warsaw, Poland, and survived the Holocaust as a child. After being incarcerated in the Warsaw Ghetto for eighteen months, she hid, under a false identity, for the remainder of the war in several Polish villages. We were all moved by her story and students asked many poignant questions before silently leaving the Atrium to return to classes.

"When I spoke with our speaker, Lillian, after the event, she told me she could not believe how wonderful our students were at listening to her – she speaks very often at non-Jewish schools and she wanted us to know how special (and meaningful) it was for her to speak with all of us."
~  Russ Klein, Head of School

Thank you to Anna-Mae Wiesenthal, Aron Rosenberg and Ryvka Feigelstock for organizing such an impactful and meaningful assembly.

Putting Theory into Practice

This week, the Physics 11 class went on a special field trip to attend the Amusement Park Physics Program at Playland. This program has been running since 1988 and over 100,000 students from BC have participated in it. This is an experience designed to enhance the students’ knowledge and understanding, and to demonstrate how the physics they learn in the classroom applies to the world around them.

Happenings This Week

On Monday afternoon, the PE 9 girls took advantage of the beautiful sunshine. The class walked to Queen Elizabeth Park in the summer-like weather and enjoyed a gorgeous view of the city.

This week the Grade 10 class went hiking at Quarry Rock in Deep Cove. The hike took about 45 minutes and the students enjoyed lunch with an amazing view overlooking the water.

On Tuesday, the Healthy Active Living Class spent a fun afternoon rock climbing at Cliffhanger Climbing Gym.
This is guaranteed to be a special night and
we would love to have you join us.

On Wednesday, May 18 we are bringing the community together to celebrate our school, our students, and each other.

This year’s Teaching for Tomorrow event features Josh Shipp, also known as "The Teen Whisperer", who is one of the most acclaimed youth motivational speakers in the world. He has been featured on Good Morning America, 20/20, and Oprah. He combines heartfelt inspiration, laugh-out-loud humor, and practical strategies to drive change.
We secured the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts for the event, and look forward to socializing and being inspired together. Josh’s tagline is "helping adults understand teens and teens understand themselves." Who can’t use more of that?
