What a Week for Our King David Lions!

It has been an amazing two weeks for the PE and Athletics Department!

Congratulations to our Junior Boys West Basketball Team for winning the trophy and silver medal in the GVISAA league out of 16 teams. Mazel Tov on this incredible accomplishment.

Our Senior Boys Basketball Team had an incredible run this year, finishing third in the Lower Mainland Zone F Championships – their best finish ever. They defeated the PTI Panthers and the St. John’s Eagles but unfortunately the boys fell just shy of qualifying for Provincials; however, they were recognized by The Province newspaper this past Sunday.

It was an amazing atmosphere on Wednesday at St. John’s School where many King David fans clapped, yelled, and cheered for their Senior Girls Basketball Lions as they won the silver medal and trophy in GVISAA play out of 13 teams. Our Lady Lions and Ms. Bauck were over the moon that so many supporters were on hand for such an exciting finish. This team also defeated the Deer Lake Falcons and the St. John’s Eagles to finish third in the Lower Mainland Zone F Championships, qualifying for the BC Basketball Provincials for the first time in Lions history. Provincials will take place in Duncan, British Columbia next week. Way to go girls, we all wish you the best of luck!

As basketball season comes to an end we would like to formally thank everyone for their support, participation, and help with transportation this year: we couldn’t have done it without you. A special thanks to Mr. Dichter, Mr. Schein, Rabbi Berger, Mr. Harowitz, Ms. Bauck, Mr. Amram, Ms. Rozen-Delman, and Ms. Youngson for their passion, leadership, and coaching this year.
King David Delegation at the Model UN

This year King David had a small but terrific trio of delegates representing the school at the Jewish Canadian Youth Model United Nations Conference in Montreal, Quebec. Adi, Barbie, and Joelle did a fantastic job of preparing for their roles and engaging in the important real-world issues being discussed amongst the very motivated and well-spoken Jewish youth at the Model UN Conference. The trip began with a weekend in Montreal and our three delegates had a chance to do a walking tour of McGill and consider their interest in attending the Montreal university next year. They also reconnected with King David alumni currently attending McGill and got to hear first-hand about the social and educational opportunities available in the city. Then, from Sunday to Tuesday, Joelle, Barbie, and Adi were engaged and thoughtful participants in the JCYMUN Conference at the Sheraton Airport Hotel and made new friendships, learned invaluable skills of debate and public speaking… and they even brought home an award!

Adi, Barbie, Joelle and Ms. Yaxley in Montreal

"It was a wonderful trip and I was very honoured to go with these three mature young women and impressed by the way that they represented themselves and our school."
~ Ms. Carla Yaxley, Social Studies Teacher
"All I can say about the trip is that it is an amazing one. Montreal is great! If you have the chance I would highly recommend to go!"
~ Barbie, Grade 12

"I really enjoyed JCYMUN! I learned so much about politics, public speaking, and how the UN functions. I would recommend this experience to anyone who is interested in politics, enjoys public speaking, or would love to meet their future Jewish husband or wife!"
~ Adi, Grade 12
This Week at King David

Dr. Sam Goldstein

On Monday, Dr. Sam Goldstein addressed Grade 6 – 12 students from King David, VHA, VTT and RJDS. The subject, The Important Secrets to Survive and Thrive your Childhood, highlighted the different components of being resilient, having a growth mindset, focusing on our strengths, and learning from our mistakes rather than dwelling on them.

Practicing Curling

Our Grade 10 Boys PE class recently went curling at the Vancouver Curling Club at Hillcrest Community Center. They were taught to curl by two curling instructors, and the class will go again next Wednesday.

Peer Mentoring

Grade 4 VTT students visited King David to work with our Grade 11 students who provided help as the Grade 4 students prepare for the Speech and Essay Writing Contest.
