Understanding Globalization and Urbanization through History and Technology

On Thursday, a group of our Grade 8 students were the guests of the Ismaili Council for British Columbia. They had an opportunity to participate in Connect Create Cairo, an exhibition and workshop that uses 3D printing technology and online design tools to get people thinking about the past, present and future of cities and urban spaces and to conceive design solutions for these places. The exhibition leads visitors on a journey through Cairo’s distinctive urban landscape and architectural heritage from the 9th to the 18th centuries – including the water systems, streetscapes, commercial, civic and religious spaces, houses and other dwellings.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is an architectural-scale model of one of Cairo’s historic urban districts that contains the Al-Azhar Park and the Cairo Citadel. The model also contains other historic buildings; however, many of the residential streets and neighbourhoods are purposely left empty. The blank spaces are where our students had the opportunity to add their own 3D printed buildings, drawing on Cairo’s historic past for inspiration while collaboratively exploring critical issues facing cities and urban spaces everywhere.

Working in small groups, the students think through their design options.

The group is focused as they use an online program to design their buildings!

"It was an incredible experience for our students, and coincidentally it tied into the TAG program we held at school yesterday where we discussed the importance of community. The workshop was well-prepared. While learning more about community we experienced the warmth of the Ismaili community. They had done their research about our community and spoke about Jews in Cairo to tie it into the lesson."
~  Mr. Gorski

L-R: Romy, Jessie, Ella, and Alisa watch closely as the image sent to the 3D printer emerges.

"It was such a cool experience. We learned about cities like Cairo and the best part was where we designed our own buildings and then got to print them on a 3D printer."      ~  David, Grade 8

We are so proud of the King David Varsity Boys Basketball team! They have moved up to #8 in the "A" Provincial ranking. This is the fourth consecutive year that our team has been ranked! They also moved up to #2 in the Lower Mainland "A" rankings. These rankings can be seen by clicking here and here.

The team is coached by Mr. David Amram, Ms. Christi Bauck and Mr. Matt Dichter, and they are on their way to compete in the GVISAA championships and Lower Mainland Zone championships in February. Their next game is on Friday, January 29th at the JCC at 2:15 p.m. – come out and support the team! Way to go, boys!
Call for Props

This year, on March 16th and 17th, the King David Players are putting on the classic musical, Little Shop of Horrors. We are looking to borrow some props for the play and are wondering if anyone in the community has any of the following items that they may be able to lend us for the week of the play (March 14-18):

  • Two tables (in any condition, especially if they are old)
  • Two chairs (in any condition, especially if they are old)
  • Four corded phones
  • Two watering cans
  • Several trash cans or bins

If anyone has anything on this list, we do not need it until March. However, if you can let our drama teacher (Aron Rosenberg) know in the meantime, that would be great! He can be reached by e-mail at gro.s1524185597hdk@g1524185597rebne1524185597sora1524185597 or by phone at 604-263-9700. Thanks so much for considering!
