Grade 8 Trip to Israel

It’s now been 5 days since the Grade 8 students and staff members departed for Israel. Each day, parents have received a detailed account of the day’s adventures from Head of School, Russ Klein. Here’s a brief synopsis of what the students have been up to:

Day 1: Excited and sleepy at Haifa Gardens

After arriving in Israel, and spending the GNP of a small country on Israeli chocolate (fuelling tired kids!) we headed to the Bahai Gardens in Haifa. What outstanding views from this very special place. It was beautiful. The sun caressed us, and I think for the first time, our students really felt like they were in Israel.

Day 2: West meets East icebreaker games
On day two, we woke up early for an Israeli breakfast that included salad, vegetables, seven kinds of cheese, omelettes and hard-boiled eggs, as well as juices, breads and fruits. Soon afterwards, our Israeli student hosts arrived. The students spent some time playing icebreaker games to get to know each other, and then we visited the helicopter memorial site, as well as the Agamon Hula Valley Bird Paradise. This was a special afternoon in that this experience was provided by the Jewish National Fund (JNF) to us as a gift – a generous one at that.

Day 3: Cooling off in the rock pool at Tel Dan
Day three welcomed us with gorgeous clear blue skies and warm sunshine. We boarded a bus with our Israeli hosts and headed to the Tel Dan Nature Reserve, where we had a long hike. Tel Dan is a beautiful place, with trails and streams and 4,000-year-old ruins. After a little more than two hours at the Reserve, where the students took off their shoes and socks and cooled their weary feet.

We visited the Grade 8 building at Har Vagai School on day four. Our students gave video presentations about Canada, King David, RAC Week and school uniforms. We also visited an elementary school, HaMeginim, where we were served delicious falafel and hot peppers, and our students danced the hora with HaMeginim’s Grade 1s.

The kids have been wonderful, our jet lag is finally dissipating, and the weather has been glorious. Stay tuned for more next week!
