Bon Voyage!

On Sunday, our largest-yet King David delegation of 41 Grade 8 students and 5 chaperones will be boarding an early morning flight bound for Toronto and then onto Israel!

“I would like to wish the Grade 8 staff and students a ‘n’siyah tovah’ on behalf of the P2G Committee of Federation. We hope you will have a fun, meaningful, and memorable ‘mifgash’ with Har Vagai, our P2G partner school.”
~ Pam Wolfman, Chair, P2G Committee

Israel is profoundly and effectively woven into the curriculum and culture of King David. The partnering of King David and Har Vagai through the Partnership 2Gether “Gesher Chai” program introduces our students, through the eyes of their Israeli peers and educators, to Israel’s challenges and to the persistence of the vision upon which  Israel was founded. Through these personal encounters our students are coming to know each other and recognize that the Jewish future is jointly in their hands. Todah Rabah to the Jewish Federation of Vancouver’s P2G program for making this trip possible!

We look forward to hearing from the group as they travel to and through the Land of Milk and Honey!

King David introduces TAG
Mr. Gorski
King David has launched its Teacher Advisory Group program, focusing on fostering social and emotional learning skills. Students in Grades 8, 9 and 10 met in multi-grade groups of approximately 10 students with either one or two teachers for one hour to discuss topics which will lead them to know themselves better as they navigate their high school experience. TAG’s purpose is to support our students to feel successful in all areas of their lives. We hope to provide our students with tools to help them feel calmer, more confident, more connected, develop a learning mindset, and thus achieve better academically.
Ms. Lane

Teachers shared their own experiences from high school, some fun facts and a picture to connect on a personal level. The small group setting provides an opportunity for students to learn from each other and connect with other students across the grades.  Today was the first TAG meeting of this pilot program and it will continue to evolve after we consider our students’ feedback.

Pi Day Challenge

Ari Shiff presents Eli, Grade 12, with the iPad.

The 3.14 is a day filled with mathematical  challenges and brain teasers at King David. Students participate in a friendly competition to win an iPad generously donated by Inflection Management Inc. and the Shiff family. Eli, Grade 12, solved the Pi puzzle and was the proud recipient of the iPad.

Here are a couple of the brain teasers – can you answer them? (Answers are below the questions)

1) What famous Mathematician/Scientist was born on Pi Day?

2) Which digit (0 – 9) is missing from the first 30 decimal places of Pi?

3) Using eight 8’s, write a sum that totals 1000.

4) A merchant can place 8 large boxes or 10 small boxes in a carton for shipping. In one shipment, he sent a total of 96 boxes. If there were more large boxes than small boxes, how any cartons did she ship?

1.  Albert Einstein                                           2.  0
3.  888 + 88 + 8 + 8 + 8                                   4. 11 cartons
Table Tennis Fun!

Ashley, Grade 10

The Grade 10 girls PE class has enjoyed three days of table tennis at the Richmond Olympic Oval. They have been working on their hand-eye coordination as well as their sportsmanship – they’ve also been having lots of fun!

Some of the girls took a competitive approach, challenging each other for the win, and others took a very cooperative approach, seeing how long they could keep a rally going.
