Learning from our King David Alumni

Alex, Grade 12, enjoys a conversation with Rochelle

In Tuesday’s Psychology class, Mrs. Wiesenthal invited King David alumnus, Rochelle Pullmer, to be a guest speaker. Rochelle is currently working on her Master’s degree in child-clinical psychology at Simon Fraser University, and did a presentation on childhood depression and anxiety disorders. She also gave us the opportunity to take a look at the Diagnositc and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The size of the book was shockingly large and the controversy surrounding the edition was very interesting to learn about. Rochelle also provided us with information about the process of diagnosing a patient. Thank you to Rochelle for such an eye-opening presentation!

Spreading the Chesed

Libby, Ruby, Sarah and Rom, Grade 7 RJDS,
 prepare the batter

We were excited to host the Grade 7 class from RJDS on Wednesday when they began their RAC week preparations in our Foods room. Divided into four groups, they churned out dozens of cupcakes under the skillful guidance of King David students, Izzy, Grade 11, Josh, Justine and Leeor, Grade 9. The  cupcakes will be distributed as they perform acts of chesed during RAC week.

It was wonderful to see the partnership between the local Jewish Day Schools flourishing in the easy and comfortable interactions between the students from both schools.

A happy group of RJDS students after
baking dozens of cupcakes!

RAC Week 2014:

1,000 Mitzvah Challenge

 Friday, February 21st

Can a school of 180 students perform 1,000 mitzvahs in one day?

This year, Random Acts of Chesed (RAC) week kicks off on Friday, February 21st with a 1,000 mitzvah challenge. King David students will set out to inspire and spread chesed (kindness) throughout the Vancouver community.

Please join us on Friday, February 21st at 12pm for a BBQ lunch followed by Kabbalat Shabbat. Together we will explore the concept of random acts of kindness and set an intent and Kavanah for chesed in our community.

RAC week was inspired by our beloved Gabi Isserow z”l whose actions represented the spirit of chesed. If you would like to continue to support chesed at King David you can donate online through the Gabrielle Isserow z”l Fund.

If you woul
d like to join us for the BBQ and Kabbalat Shabbat, please RSVP at 604.263.9700 ext. 109 or email our Sharon Dwek.

Continue the mitzvah and please save the date for Teaching for Tomorrow on May 14th 2014. Linda Cohen, author of 1,000 Mitzvahs, will inspire us to perform acts of kindness individually and collectively.

Calling all Jewish teens!

During our annual RAC Week, we go out into the Vancouver community to volunteer and do the mitzvah of chesed (kindness) for those in need in our community.
