Welcoming the Shabbat Together
Ya’el, Grade 8, prepares to welcome Shabbat
as she lights the first candle
Following the Grade 8 student welcome during our SImchat Torah celebration, on Friday evening, at a Shabbat dinner, we welcomed all the Grade 8 families to the King David community.

The Atrium was filled with the happy sounds of 160 people getting to know each other. Students led the Kabbalat Shabbat and D’var Torah and following dessert, we all enjoyed beautiful poetry about Beginnings, written and recited by the students.

The beginning of the Mizrachi family’s
King David journey!
Learning about Biodiversity

This week, the Biology 11 students went to Lynn Canyon Park to investigate British Columbia’s coastal temperate rainforest. Our students learned skills in plant identification, data collection and basic data analysis.

“It was a compelling experience touring around the forest and learning more about the plants and trees in Lynn Canyon.”
          ~Jamie, Grade 11

“It was a captivating experience with wondrous views and excessive biodiversity.”

Edible Cells!
Do you know the difference between plant and animal cells? Our Grade 8 students do …

They have been learning about plant and animal cells in Science. As a summary of this unit they were asked to create a 3D model of a cell made entirely of edible materials. The students were very creative! They made cell cakes, cell pizzas and even cells made out of rice crispy squares.

Brad and Josh look on as Mr. Klein quizzes them on the parts of their model cell
Ms. Gardiner and Maytar watch as Inbar identifies parts of her yummy cell
In the Spirit of Advocacy

One of the courses we teach all Grade 12 students is Israel Advocacy (IA).  One of the goals of the class is to give students the tools to talk about Israel to people they meet outside of our community in a balanced and informational manner so that they may become better informed.  For example, in Vancouver we recently experienced first-hand what being “misinformed” looked like as Translink allowed the use of an advertisement that clearly misrepresented maps of Israel over the years.  On November 4th, our IA students will be discussing this very issue in a forum with different perspectives presented by respected community members.  This past Sunday at King David we experienced the passion that is Israel in the form of the Best of Hebrew U: Stretch Your Mind Conference where presenters entertained, enlightened, and brought the strength and diversity that is Israel, home to us.

There are so many wonderful videos and articles written about Israel – but in the spirit of Advocacy, I want to share one that seems appropriate for our high school that focuses on adolescent engagement.  Feel free to pass it along…
